  • Determine the quantity of bricks: Subtract the mortar joints from the surface area of the wall and multiply the result by the brick's face area. By deducting the mortar joint thickness from the brick's length and height, one can get the face area of a brick.
  • For illustration, suppose the bricks are 230 mm x 115 mm x 75 mm in size and the mortar joint is 10 mm thick. The face area of the brick would be (230mm - 10mm) x (115mm - 10mm), which is 220mm x 105mm (or 0.22m x 0.105m). Calculate the number of bricks by dividing the wall's surface area by each brick's face area while taking the thickness of the mortar joint into consideration. Number of bricks = (Wall surface area) / (Brick face area) = 15 / (0.22 x 0.105) = around 640 bricks. This is based on the preceding example of a 15 square meter wall and the brick face area determined above.
  • Make adjustments for waste and extra layers: Calculating the quantity of bricks should take waste and extra layers into consideration. It is important to take into account elements like breakage, cutting, and the insertion of a second layer for stability or insulation. In order to account for these variables, it is usual practice to add an extra 5–10% to the calculated number of bricks.
